Astons Sunday 11th May 2008
Match Result - Won
Blewbury and Upton went into this regained fixture with the aim of continuing their fine form from the previous weeks victory in the National Village Cup. With the weather providing a brilliant summers day in late spring the game began with Blewbury organising the toss and electing to bat. The opening pair of Tom Wigley and Ed Wagner began steadily before Wagner fell to the consistent Gray for 5. The loss of the first wicket brought Jamie Fraser to the crease, where he applied himself excellently and ended up top scoring in the Blewbury innings with 58. Fraser was ably supported by Wigley (35) and James Barrett (51) with whom he shared a 50 partnership. After Barrett returned to the pavilion, rapid runs were needed during the final overs before tea and they were duly supplied by Ben Strange, who added a quick-fire 32 in good batting conditions. The declaration at tea left Blewbury on 199 for 8, with Dew and Gray collecting 3 wickets each.
The Astons team began their chase of 200 very poorly with wickets falling regularly in two quick opening spells from Colin Allen and Jamie Fraser. As the 4 of the top five batsmen managed no score between them the game looked in little doubt from the tenth over onwards. Even though the opening pair bowled superbly, each rewarded with 2 wickets, the bowling performance of the day has to go to James Thwaites. At just 13 James showed great maturity during his tidy four over spell where he took the wickets of the Astons top scoring batsmen (Smith 12, Dew 17) and was only denied a hat-trick by a ball just sliding down leg. By the 21st over of the game Blewbury had completed their first back to back win of the season by 140 runs as Ed Fraser and Ed Wagner cleaned up the tail, getting 2 and 1 wickets respectively. Blewbury now move on to what has to be the most taxing game of the season so far, a fixture in the 3rd round of the NVC vs Pinkneys Green.
