OCCSCC - Sunday 15th June 2008

Match Result - Won

After winning the toss and electing to bat on what was reported to be a slow, low wicket, Blewbury enjoyed an explosive to start to the innings with Tom Wigley and Simon Barrett putting on a 50 partnership from little more than 8 overs. Tom Wigley raced to his 50, whilst ably supported by Simon Barrett at the other end. The partnership was eventually broken when Simon played on for 14 but Blewbury still looked good at 75-1.

Christian Vecchione came to the crease and immediately set about continuing the fast pace with some lovely cover drive boundaries. He hit a classy 18 before showing what a class player he is by very sportingly walking on a caught behind decision which was extremely difficult for the umpire to give out. Soon after, Tom Wigley was caught in the deep for 67, leaving two new batsmen at the crease. However, Ed Wagner and Colin Allen enjoyed a good partnership together before Ed popped one back to the bowler for 9. Ben Strange then came and went pretty quickly for 0, bringing James Kenney to the crease. James and Colin set about rebuilding the innings and Colin hit a quick 37 before hitting a full toss straight to the fielder. Tom Wigley snr hit a couple of boundaries to keep the score ticking over before James Kenney was unfortunately stumped for 22. This brought a relatively rusty Tim Wigley to the crease who followed in Ben Strange’s footsteps and returned to the pavilion without troubling the scorers. This brought Hugh Fraser to the crease who also did not trouble the scorers, leaving just Knighty to come in and finish off the last 3 overs of the innings. Unfortunately, Knighty did not get to face a ball as Tom Wigley was bowled by a good delivery for 13, bringing an end to the Blewbury innings at 202 after 38 overs.

After tea, Colin Allen and Ben Strange opened up the bowling with some good pace and movement. Colin bowled with his usual lack of luck, beating the outside edge on many occasions, but at the other end, Ben Strange picked up 2 good wickets with the ball beating the batsmen off the pitch. Having seen how hard it was to get the ball away in their innings, Blewbury decided to take the pace off the ball and make OCCSCC force the ball away. This meant Hugh Fraser and Ed Wagner coming on to bowl and Hugh was immediately effective, picking up the wicket of the dangerous opening batsmen with his 3rd ball. Ed then picked up the other important wicket of their number 4 batsmen who looked like he was certainly capable of scoring a large total with a cracking ball that pitched on off stump and took the top of leg. These 2 bowlers ended their 8 over spells with figures of 1-19 and 1-25 which shows just how tightly they bowled at an important time of the game, both of them picking up vital wickets.

The outstanding bowling by this pair was backed up by some superb tight fielding by the Blewbury players, who, sensing that by the 25 over mark, the game was almost safe never looked like relaxing or giving the opposition a chance to come back into it. This was reinforced by the bowling of James Kenney who in 7 overs took 4 wickets, which if he had held his second caught and bowled chance, would have been a 5 wicket haul. James bowled exceptionally well and ended with figures of 4-33. Tom and Tim Wigley had a couple of overs each at the end to try and tease out the last of the OCCSCC batsmen and Tim Wigley was successful in capturing his first wicket for BUCC. OCCSCC ended up with 140-9, leaving BUCC comfortable winners in the end.
