Pinkneys Green (NVC) Sunday 18th May 2008

Match Result - lost

Following the easy win against Badshot Lea in the 2nd round Blewbury faced a far more competitive team in Pinkneys Green in round 3. Due to the rain during the week it was difficult to say how the pitch would play and when captain Tom Wigley won the toss he had a difficult choice to make. With the backing of the side he chose to bat and Blewburys NVC campaign continued. Openers, Tom Wigley and John Barrett, got off to a solid start putting on 60 for no loss in the first ten overs and seeing off the new ball. With timing hard to come by, due to the low bounce of the wicket, Pinkneys Green made the breakthrough in the 12th over when Wigley nicked a full length ball to the keeper bringing the end to a confident knock of 29. This brought James Barrett to the crease, who continued in the manner set by the skipper, taking little time to get into his stride. With good running between the wickets and competent punishing of the bad balls the Barrett brothers moved to score onto 113 for 1 at drinks in the 20th over. As is often associated with a drinks break a lack of concentration by John Barrett drew a loose shot, which was easily taken on the long on boundary. At 114 for 2, with John Barrett falling for 46, Colin Allen came to the crease. Colins innings began well with some nice straight drives and some good running between the wickets, until another piece of mistiming led to another straightforward catch in the deep. This triggered a collapse from Blewbury with the next 5 wickets falling for just 28 runs. Despite a late flurry from Simon Barrett (18 not out) Blewburys innings came to an end for 171 all out.

Following the tea interval, Blewbury set about defending their modest total of 171. Colin Allen and Ed Fraser took the new ball and began tightly restricting the opposition to just 8 runs of the first six overs. With the first bowling change came the first wicket as Ben Strange drew the Pinkneys opener into a loose shot, which was brilliantly taken by Simon Barrett at first slip. This however brought the Pinkneys Green number 3 to the crease who was particularly brutal in punishing the short balls and swiftly moved onto 31 before being caught by James Kenney off Ed Fraser. Andy Clark quickly removed the number 4 bringing the dangerous Butt to the crease. The tall right-hander began to take the attack to the bowlers as the game looked to slip away from Blewbury. The return of paceman Colin Allen to the fold brought a well deserved wicket as another good catch in the slips by Simon Barrett removed the lucky Pinkneys opener whom had been dropped numerous times. This was too little too late for Blewbury, despite Tom Wigley taking two wickets in the last over, as Pinkneys hit the winning runs with four wickets and five overs remaining.
